Christmas Eve. 1948. Deep in the heart of Galway, Eamonn, the fattest baby you’ve ever seen, is found abandoned in a manger.

70 years later, after struggling to make amends with his estranged daughter Sarah and grandson Ben, one final and fateful action leaves the next two generations of his family reeling.

 

Winner of the Methuen Drama and Marlowe Society Other Prize 2017Bromley Bedlam Bethlehem, is a visceral and candid new play about the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

 

Starring Dan Mullane (MedeaAlmeidaThree SistersRoyal Court), Madeleine Bowyer (Black MirrorEmmerdaleHolby City) and Daniel Rainford (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama graduate).

 

Written by Rachel Tookey (Winner of the Footlights Harry Porter Prize for Judge Judy’s Buzz World), and directed by Thomas Martin (Ross and RachelIf We Got Some More Cocaine I Could Show You How I Love You), with music by multi-award-winning composer Hollie Buhagiar (Best Composer Underwire Film Festival 2018, and 2018 OffWestEnd Award Nominee for Best Sound Designer for Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties).

 

Bromley Bedlam Bethlehem is supported by Arts Council England and presented by Voxie Productions (An MGCfutures supported company, and producers of sell-out Edfringe 2018 hit Ad Libido, ★★★★ The Guardian, ★★★★ The Stage, one of The Guardian’s “Best Shows at the Edinburgh Festival 2018”).

About the author:

Rachel Tookey (www.racheltookey.com) is a writer for stage and screen. Her work has been presented in venues including Southwark Playhouse, the Lyric Hammersmith, the Etcetera Theatre, and New York's The Kraine Theater. Her first play Judge Judy’s Buzz World won the Footlights’ Harry Porter Prize, for which she also received an Arts Council England grant to transfer it to the Camden Fringe 2016, where it received numerous ★★★★ reviews: “Extremely impressive” ★★★★ Cambridge Theatre Review, “Mighty fine piece of storytelling” ★★★★ Views from the Gods. In 2017, she was commissioned by the Roundhouse to make her first short film BLUR. She studied at Cambridge University, where she became the first ever writer to win both playwriting prizes, and was published in the prestigious Mays Anthology.

One of her first full length plays, Bromley Bedlam Bethlehem won the Methuen Drama and Marlowe Society Other Prize in 2017, and was long-listed for The North Wall Theatrecraft Scheme 2017. Extracts of it have been featured in SLAM Festival at the Arcola Theatre, and performed at the Lyric Hammersmith as part of Page to Stage.

Voxie Productions is an award-winning theatre and film company that focusses on exploring important contemporary issues. Our first production, Ad Libido, had a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe 2018 receiving ★★★★ in The Stage and The Guardian and being listed as one of their "Best Shows at the Edinburgh Festival 2018". As a 2018 MGCfutures Bursary Winner and supported company, we are developing two new projects across 2019, to premiere in 2020.
