SMOKE
A REHEARSED READING
‘I’M NOT GOING TO HURT YOU’
‘I WANT YOU TO HURT ME. CAN YOU DO THAT FOR ME?’
‘I CAN DO THAT FOR YOU’
‘I WANT TO SEE IF YOU CAN BREAK ME DOWN A LITTLE.’
‘You know you get to choose what happens to you, right?’
That’s what John tells Julie when they meet by accident at a kink-play party in New York City. She’s an aspiring college dropout living in the shadow of her famous artist parents; he’s her father’s too-old-to-be-unknown intern. The two instantly connect and with knives bared, sex an open question tensions run high as Julie and John teeter between pain and play, fear and fun.
The audience is left questioning: who really is in control?
Bound By Theatre Company presents a rehearsed reading in anticipation of an Edinburgh Festival Fringe run this summer, August 2019.
‘The premise of the intense, provocative and exceedingly clever Smoke could put off anyone who finds sadomasochism, bondage and discipline rather curious hobbies. It shouldn’t…’
The New York Times
‘Davies repurposes discomfort, making Smoke a cynical, magnetic miniature about consent itself.’
