a matter of life and death
by fred rosen
directed by Joe Lichtenstein
“How long have you known? About me? About me dying?”
Simon wants to talk about his girlfriend. Paul wants to play chess. Simon wants to go away for his birthday. Paul knows that he can’t. Simon and Paul are young and directionless. They bicker and tease each other as best friends do. A normal evening at Paul’s flat turns unforgettable as Paul reveals he knows when Simon is going to die. Darkly-comic and moving, Rosen’s play investigates mortality and friendship in the modern world.
This “exceptionally well-crafted comic drama” (Broadway Baby *****) is the first play by young talent Fred Rosen and will be directed by Joe Lichtenstein of Wolf Theatre who recently assisted Ivo van Hove on A View from the Bridge. The play stars James Esler and Sam Hill.
Ranked the 22nd best reviewed show of the Edinburgh Fringe by The List magazine, ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ comes to The Old Red Lion Theatre for a five show run.
